Don’t forget, the annual Greenwood Art Walk is tonight and tomorrow; my work can be seen at Balderdash Books & Art. Also, in the Art Show at the Phinney/Greenwood center proper, they are showcasing some of Regina Rubin’s work; she is one of the teachers who has really had the most material effect on my development as an artist, and her work deserves a long look.

I’m really quite fond of it, even if it is slightly less quirky than my usual space stuff. It is the second of the larger size prints, and I think I just really like having an almost-glowing planet half the size of my head on the wall. The complete lack of sense of scale of the web is growing increasingly irritating.

In Search of a B-Movie

While the daughters were napping today, I managed to get a little wax time in, prepping boards for the two pieces that have been in my head for weeks. The first one is “Dollface”, an extrapolation of the direction started in “Cherry Bomb” (same image, different direction, much different size). I’ve started casting a couple dozen doll faces that will be part of the piece, and as a consequence, managed to drip 200 degree wax on my fingers multiple times.

As a result of these little accidents, I started brushing the color on in layers, and had to stop half way on one to check on a Suspicious Noise(tm); I accidentally resumed with a different shade of red, and once I popped the results out of the mold, I really liked the increased depth the variation in color gives the piece, especially in how it highlights the features. So I started mixing colors on purpose, partially inspired by the colors in the wonderful piece (a purply-blue sphinx) that arrived yesterday from Angie Reed Gardner.

(I was going to show you, but my scanner is now in collusion with my printer, and is refusing to operate, and all the digital cameras are currently tied up. Hmph.)

(Just doling out the new pieces until I actually get the show hung.)

The pieces for the Balderdash show are now framed and ready to hang, with three new space pieces ready to make their debut. This show is entirely space art, which I’m incredibly excited about.

First up, the long awaited (by me, anyway) sequel to Fishy Way:

Gas Giants, 2006

Gas Giants
12″ x 18″, LE of 50

I’m really pleased with how this looks at a big size; It’s hard to go back to printing small, especially once you see just how small 8×10, even with a nice mat and frame, looks on a wall.

Coming soon: A classic space scene (complete with flying saucers!) and Floral System III
