Status update

State of the Jane: there hasn’t been much in the way of new work or new shows, because it’s the height of wedding season, so I’m busy at the day job AND intensely preparing for the full launch of my album design/retouching service, A La Carte Albums this fall. And of course, the girls didn’t go back to school until a few days ago, which has, shall we say, cut into my working hours. Also, somewhere in there my main hard drive died, taking my photoshop installation with it, and while I’m back up and running, I’m still discovering yet another useful action I had written but never backed up every time I start working, including the one that preps images for the web. Whee!

I just signed up with CreativeLive.com, which is offering a number of very cool free classes from the kinds of teachers you’d normally have to be quick on the draw and flush in the wallet to get a workshop from (Zack Arias! Art Wolfe!); it leans towards photography and tech (which is expected, with Chase Jarvis one of the creators) but I will be taking a Watercolor 101 class (since I already have the supplies, but now the know-how; it’s been *years* since I last really worked with watercolor.)

A few lucky Seattle folks might be able to attend these in-person, rather than telecast, for free, since they film here. Check it out.

Reception tonight for my show at Fremont Jewelry Design, as part of the Fremont First Friday Art Walk.
The show will be up for all of may, but if you come to the reception there will be a) me (eep!) pretending to not be shy, b) Nico Rich’s fabulous trunk show, c) free jewelry inspection/cleaning and 10% off retail items at FJD, and d) refreshments.

For those of you not familiar with FJD, it is on Fremont Place N, east from the Lenin Statue, between Deluxe Junk and Silence Heart Nest.

It’s on the Fremont First Friday Blog and everything!

The show will be up by May 5th and be up all month, but the reception, which includes a trunk show of fabulous jewelry by Nico Rich, and discounts on FJD‘s normal stock, is the 7th, from 6-9.

I’m really excited about this show (even if the body of work still desperately needs a better name) and hope to see some of you there!

What is it about frames and water?

Some of you may remember the “Water Sale” I had a few years back after a plumbing leak did bad bad things to my studio, including offing a number of framed pieces. I found a much better place (I thought) to store my framed work after that.

Out water heater, however, had other ideas; also the difficult to discern and yet far from level slope of the storage room, resulting in my neat-and-dry location getting splashed and soggy.

I *might* be selling salvaged prints at a discount (frames are definitely toast, mats are suspicious, prints should be fine as long as I remove them ASAP), but I’ve not yet decided; at a certain point it just becomes One More Thing To Do on an already too long list.

And, unfortunately, I cannot just decree “No More Framed Work” because I’ve got honest to goodness SHOWS this year of the type where you don’t just hang a bagged, matted print on pegboard. Metal Prints are looking better all the time, despite the hideous price tag.

Just one darn thing after another, you know?

My beloved computer has been acting … strangely. Fine for ages, then stuttering and crashing at widely spaced intervals that lull me into complacency.

This morning, I launched my e-mail program, and it asked me to set up my e-mail account(s) anew.

I do not yet know how much has been lost, or where else data has been lost; I do have a good backup protocol in place for the last few months (via Backblaze), but the tricky bit is going to be figuring out what, amongst a terabyte of data, needs to be restored. This also means dredged through the scraps of data to find current addresses to contact clients if they are affected, after I figure out if they are affected. While it is not the worst possible time for this to happen, it’s not far from it.

I will probably be even less communicative than usual for the next few weeks as this gets sorted out.
