building a show

on Jul 26, 2016

My next show is MidAmericon 2 (Worldcon!) in Kansas City,  and right now I am in the process of going through every piece I have to pick the set that will be hanging there.  It’s not quite as intense as when I had to put together shows of my photography (which meant not only picking pieces, but how to print and frame them to increase the thematic connections between them. And quality time with the spirit level and tape measure to get everything hung at the optimal height and un-skewed.) but it’s still a thoughtful and time-consuming enterprise.  There are a few pieces I’ve been holding out for Worldcon for the last few months, but now out of the 200-ish pieces I have made and currently in my studio, I need to build a set of 40 around them that has a complete range of sizes, styles and prices, while also not being, say 75% pieces dominated by the color blue. (I reach for blue a LOT. When I’m not reaching automatically for deep purples…)

Almost everything that is a very specific portrait of an astronomical phenomenon will be going, and the mostly abstract pieces (when I just got lost in having fun with my media) will be mostly staying home.  That leaves about 8 trays of work spread out on the floor to pick the last twenty from.

Like this, only twice as much:

These are pretty solidly on the “going to Kansas City” train — if you would like them to go to your house instead, drop me a line before Friday!
